ElevenLabs, Murf, Speechify, PlayHT and Fish Audio are good tools. The question is which one fits the work: how it bills, what a finished hour costs, whether your cloned voice can say what your script says, and whether adult content is allowed at all. The table answers that; the sections below go tool by tool.
Prices and policies are as published in October 2026 and change; the links in each section go to the source. This page replaces the fifteen single-tool comparison pages this site used to run.
What each tool bills for, what the first paid tier costs, and the two things most comparison pages leave out: the content policy and whether cloning is restricted.

ElevenLabs is the reference for voice quality and the biggest library in the category, and its API is on every paid plan from $6 a month. It bills in credits that track characters, so a long script in a verbose language costs more than the same minutes of audio in English, and heavy users move through the Creator tier's 121,000 credits quickly. It blocks the cloning of celebrity and other high-risk voices, and adult content falls under its prohibited-content policy rather than being allowed outright.
The Studio is the alternative when the work is explicit, emotional, or long. Delivery is set per line with bracket directions, a clone from a thirty-second sample takes those directions too, the NSFW text to speech is a first-class use rather than a policy exception, and billing is by the minute of audio you keep. Where ElevenLabs wins is breadth: thousands of community voices, dubbing, and a developer ecosystem this site does not try to match. ElevenLabs pricing.
Murf is a studio for corporate video, e-learning and presentations: a timeline editor, a large voice library, and plans sold as hours of generation per year, Creator at $29 a month or $19 on annual billing for 24 hours. It is a good fit when a team needs polished narration over slides and a shared workspace.
It is a poor fit for adult content, for voice changing, and for anyone who wants to buy once: the Studio's $49 one-time tier covers 100 minutes a month indefinitely, and the voice changer, the audiobook tool and cloning are in the same account. Murf pricing.
Speechify is a reading app: it reads documents, web pages and books to you at up to 5x speed, with 1,000-plus voices in 60-plus languages on the $29-a-month Premium plan. The free tier has ten basic voices. People searching for a Speechify alternative usually want one of two different things: a better reader, or a way to produce audio they can publish.
For producing audio the Studio is the other kind of tool: it exports MP3s, clones voices, narrates whole books from a PDF or EPUB in the Audiobook Studio, and allows the content Speechify is not built for. For reading your own documents aloud, the free PDF to speech page covers the small version. Speechify pricing.
PlayHT sold character budgets: a free plan with 12,500 characters a month and required attribution, Creator at $39 a month for 250,000 characters and ten instant clones, Unlimited at $99. Its standalone product's future became uncertain after its acquisition in 2025, which is the main reason people look for a replacement now.
If you came from PlayHT for cloning and volume, the Studio's clones take one sample of up to thirty seconds, billing is by minute instead of character, and the lifetime tiers remove the monthly question entirely. If you came for the API, it is on the monthly plans and the $99 lifetime tier.
Fish Audio is free to start for personal use, has a large community voice library, and generates in many languages; commercial use needs a paid plan. It is often recommended online as an uncensored option. Its terms say otherwise: user submissions that contain sexually explicit content or pornography are prohibited, which matters if that is what you were going to make.
The Studio is the honest answer to that search. Adult content is allowed within the usage policy, the voices take explicit text with the same directions as any other, and the free NSFW text to speech page is the place to test it. Fish Audio.
These used to have pages of their own. Each is a different kind of product, and the short version is enough.
Descript is a video and podcast editor with text-based editing and its own voice cloning for fixing recordings. It is not a voice generator for new content; the Studio is, and the two are often used together.
Lovo (Genny) is a video-first voiceover studio with a large voice library and subtitle tools, sold as a monthly subscription. The Studio differs on adult content, cloning with directions, and one-time pricing.
Resemble AI is an enterprise cloning and speech API with deepfake detection. It sells to companies integrating voice; the Studio sells to the creator sitting in front of it.
FakeYou is a community site of character and celebrity-style voices with free generation and queues. The Studio's celebrity voice pages cover the same wish with a studio behind them.
NaturalReader is a reading tool for documents, closer to Speechify than to a production studio. For publishing audio, see the Speechify section above.
Voicemod is a real-time voice changer that runs on your computer for games and calls. The Studio's voice changer converts recordings, not live audio; for live use Voicemod is the right kind of tool.
Voice.ai is another live voice changer, desktop first. Same answer: recordings here, live there.
WellSaid Labs makes corporate voices for training and product video, with a strict content policy to match. The Studio is for creators and allows what WellSaid is built to exclude.
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech and Amazon Polly are developer APIs billed per character, with no studio, no cloning for individuals, and acceptable-use policies written for enterprises. The Studio's API is for the same job with the Studio's voices.
Billing is by minute of finished audio. Plans start at $49 one-time for 100 minutes a month, with 300, 500 and larger tiers above it; the current tiers and prices are on the Text to Speech Studio page. Creating an account is free and needs no card.
Open the StudioOf the six compared here, the Text to Speech Studio allows it within its usage policy. Fish Audio's terms prohibit sexually explicit submissions; ElevenLabs puts adult content under its prohibited-content policy; Murf and PlayHT publish terms you should read first; Speechify is a reading app. Policies change, so check the current text before you build on any of them.
ElevenLabs itself has a free tier of 10,000 credits a month. On this site, creating a Studio account is free with no card, and the free text to speech page runs with no login on standard voices. Generation in the Studio runs on a plan, from $49 one-time.
It depends on how much you make. Murf's annual Creator plan works out around $9.50 a finished hour. The Studio's $49 one-time tier gives 100 minutes a month for as long as you keep the account, so the cost per hour falls every month you use it. ElevenLabs and PlayHT bill in characters or credits, so the cost depends on the language and the script.
Clones do not transfer between services; each one trains its own. In the Studio a clone takes one clean sample of up to thirty seconds and responds to the same bracket directions as the library voices.
They are folded into this one. Each tool has a section above and the old addresses redirect to it, so saved links still work.
A desktop real-time changer such as Voicemod or Voice.ai. The Studio's voice changer converts recordings, which suits videos, clips and soundboards rather than live calls.
